Our principal Nicky Fammartino enjoyed a day out at Peninsula Quarries, in Somerville on Pottery Road for a grant presentation and a tour. Can you see her in the photo & did she really get to drive the truck?
Somerville Rise Primary School, recently received a Peninsula Quarries Community Engagement Group Grant at the end of September 2018. This local community grant from Peninsula Quarries will assist our school in improving some of our environmental projects connected to: The Barn – Environmental Learning Hub
Grant Project Details for our SRPS Environmental Project:
Our SRPS proposed environmental project is to restore the school’s propagation shelter to a useable level. This will provide a wide range of environmental learning experiences such as collecting and propagating seeds for the classroom, school yard and vegetable gardens for the whole school and wider community. Students learn how to grow plants from seed and ‘sample’ product that they grow such as beans, tomatoes and peas from the plants. Students will also collect seeds of native plants that are indigenous to the local environment. These plants hopefully at some point will be sold at low prices to the local community for use in gardens in Somerville and Tyabb. The money raised from these sales goes back into the program.
Repairs and improvements to this space will provide opportunities for both students and staff to continue to propagate seeds which has been an important component of Somerville Rise Primary School’s environmental program. The propagation shed is located in the ‘Barn’ area which has an environmental learning focus. Within the Barn area there are natural areas, garden beds, worm farms and an Environmental Education learning space (with the Barn itself). This project aims to enhance our community and a sense of belonging to the environment that is a safe, fun and engaging place learn, work and live in.
Peninsula Quarries Community Engagement Group: stated, “We hope that the improvements to The Barn will provide a positive experience for your students, your school and the wider community for many years to come.”
Somerville Rise Primary School, is grateful for this grant support and we want to say a BIG Thank You from the bottom of our hearts for the generosity from the Peninsula Quarries Community Engagement Group in Somerville.
